Pyrography, DRAWINGS and Woodcarving
About
Alan and Nedra Denison
Welcome to the sometimes wild and crazy world of Sawdust Connection and
Nedra's Pyrography.
This world started long before Alan and Nedra became "The Denison's" about
11 years ago.
Alan is a woodcarver from way back, or should I say finger carver, because
that's what he first started doing at the age of 11. After refining
his techniques, he finally figured out that carving wood was much more
effective and less expensive than buying stock in band-aids. Alan
enjoyed whittling away on caricatures and eventually started carving canes
and other
oddities.
When Alan got involved in the Texas Woodcarvers Guild and attended some of
their rallies, Nedra started getting just a little bit jealous. He
was having just too much fun, so when Alan attended the 2000
Spring rally, Nedra went along and took a chip carving class. Nedra
thought this was great fun, but the entire time she was taking this class
she had the smell of burning wood behind her and couldn't resist the
temptation to try woodburning herself. Well, she got Alan to stay in
Fredericksburg one more day so she could have her hand in woodburning and
the rest is history. She's been burning the house down ever since.
Nedra has been doing Pyrography now, has won many awards
for her work and has been sought after to teach classes throughout Texas.
Well, now that Alan and Nedra were both hip deep in wood, they
decided to do something with all that wood. Alan was hoping to
retire from his job with the VA in the next year and needed to find
something to do with his time, so he started his own business. And
if you have a business, you have to have a name. Since Al was heavily into
his new RBI Scroll saw at the time and creating lots of sawdust, he
came up with the name Sawdust Connection. He said he was the connection between all
that sawdust on the floor and the finished piece of art he was creating.
And so, you have the history of Sawdust Connection.
Through Sawdust
Connection, Alan sells his woodcrafts and woodcarving/burning supplies at
woodcarving and craft shows. Now that Alan is retired, he can devote
all his attention to his woodcarving and Sawdust Connection.
After winning many
awards for her pyrography and building up her confidence in her art, Nedra
started teaching and it was finally time to start her own business, a
little over a year ago and what better name than, Nedra's
Pyrography. The focus of her business is her pyrography and teaching
pyrography, however Nedra has now started dabbling in some pencil drawing.
What started out as therapy for Nedra, has now turned into a new
beginning.
What We Do
Alan's love is his scrollsaw and caricature carving and if you give him a piece of wood he
lets it talk to him and tell him what it's going to be. He can turn a
block of wood into some wonderful creations and you never know what he is
going to create. Nedra's love is Pyrography, but she sometimes dabbles in Chip
Carving.
